Manoomin in Anishinaabemowin, or wild rice in English, is a plant with significant importance for ecological, human and cultural health.
Archaeologist James Conolly has documented evidence of cultivation of Manoomin for at least 4,000 years in the Kawartha Lakes area. Manoomin is a traditional food source with sacred meaning to Anishinaabeg peoples. The Anishinaabeg have been cultivating Manoomin to ensure its continuance and uphold the relationships that Manoomin supports.
